Dene at Cold Lake Remain Despite Eviction Threat

MEDIA UPDATE:

Dene Suline get Alberta Government to Back Off Eviction Threats Wednesday, June 8, 2011 (Dene Suline Peace Camp, Cold Lake Alberta)

The Dene Suline Peace Camp at Berry Point by English Bay near Cold Lake continues to stand as the Provincial Government backs off eviction threats. The Dene Suline have maintained their exclusive use and occupancy of their traditional territory and are requesting that the Canadian and Alberta government begin direct negotiations with peace camp members and follow proper protocol. As of this morning no formal court order has been served to members of the camp. The Dene Suline Peace Camp continues to assert their underlying inherent title to the territory and rights to protect burial sites, the sacred fire, and maintain traditional use areas. The Dene Suline Peace Camp have invited representatives of the federal and provincial governments to meet directly with residents at our camp to begin negotiations. Formal meetings and negotiations between the Dene Suline Peace Camp and the Canadian and Alberta government will seek to clarify the confusion and rectify the breakdown in communication regarding the Dene Suline’s ongoing exclusive use and occupancy of their traditional territory area at Berry Point at English Bay. -30- For more information, contact Carrie Lawrence at 587-201-1434
