Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain public info sessions start this weekend

Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline and proposed expansion.

By Kate Webb, Metro Vancouver, November 2, 2012
Kinder Morgan will start holding public information sessions about the proposed expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline this weekend.
More than a dozen events are scheduled for cities and towns all over B.C. in the next month and the Tsleil-Waututh First Nation is urging British Columbians to go and voice opposition.
Elected band councillor Carleen Thomas said the Tsleil-Waututh will not attend because as a sovereign government they should be consulted directly by the federal government, not the multi-billion-dollar energy giant behind the proposal.
“We hold protected title and rights under the Canadian Constitution, so any kind of participation in any forum or any info sessions with Kinder Morgan, we don’t want it to be interpreted as consultation,” she said.
But the band wants the rest of the public to take notice.
The $4.3-billion, 1,150-kilometre project would nearly triple the flow of oil from Edmonton to Metro Vancouver, from 300,000 barrels per day to 750,000 barrels per day.
So far Kinder Morgan has only filed a tolling application, but the company plans to file its facilities application sometime next year, at which point it will be subject to a formal regulatory review by the National Energy Board.
A discussion guide on the company’s website says feedback collected in the upcoming info sessions will be compiled early next year on the project’s website, transmountain.com.
More information sessions will also be held next summer and fall on the results of environmental field studies. Public input will be sought on proposed mitigation measures.
