Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline approved by Joint Review Panel
The Globe and Mail, Dec. 19 2013
A federal Joint Review Panel has given its blessing to Enbridge Inc’s Northern Gateway project, concluding the controversial pipeline is in the public interest, but will be subject to 209 environmental, safety and financial conditions.
The assessment of the panel — which will inform a final federal cabinet decision in about six months — said they were persuaded that the 1,178 kilometre pipeline from Alberta to the B.C. coast will meet an economic need by diversifying Canada’s oil market.
“After weighing all the oral and written evidence, the panel found that Canada and Canadians would be better off with the Enbridge Northern Gateway project than without it,” the panel said in a news release.
The panel acknowledged the project is likely to hurt caribou and grizzly populations, and said a large oil spill would cause a significant environmental, societal and economic burden — although that large spill scenario is unlikely, and the effects would not be permanent.
The panel steered clear of larger First Nation concerns about constitutionally protected rights to traditional land, leaving those long-disputed issues to Ottawa.
The decision is a major step forward for the $6.5-billion project, and a win for the oil industry, which has been pushing for access to lucrative Asian markets. But with considerable First Nation and environmental opposition to the project, a final decision will be a difficult political test for the federal Conservative government.

This was always going to be their answer wiith Harper in power..killing animals and destroying ecosystems and ignoring Indigenous rights are fine as long as the corporations and immigrant governments have any chance to make a profit. Besides tgere are plenty of current or former INAC elected councillors they can hire who are selfish and greedy enough to kiss up to tribal and band councils by wining n dining, bribing, perks, honorias or to buy off under the table..these elected thieves won’t let a chance to gorge at the newest revenues trough pass by their bottomless wallets
I stand for the inherent rights of First Nations Peoples. A large spill IS likely. This federal Joint Panel must have had something funny in their joint. (sic) China has already said that they’ll use oil platforms as “strategic weapons, to protect China’s national interests”. They’re ready to be put in place. Aircraft carriers are ready with small jets (Migs?) with folding wings that can land straight down. I saw this on the BBC about a year ago, and warned National Chief Atleo in a letter to Parliament Hill. This is a terrible deal for Canadians, who can be invaded by Mongol Warriors, for example, with swords, coming from the north. All Canadians must stand together against this ruinous government! Save Turtle Island!

Now that the department of energy n resources has taken over the responsibilities for enviromental reviews for fisheries and oceans, along with the gutting of scientists the feds will do all it can to push this through…it will be grassroots indigenous that stop or delay this project…then you have Spectra energy wanting to put through a natural gas line through the same corridor..with Keystone being tied up the focus will be on development of petrochemical infrastructure here to keep Harper’s buds in private industry happy…it is time for an all out war with these illegally residing immigrants, their governments and institutions and Enbridge’s projects are a perfect starting point
There are no treaties between native peoples who’s lands are being occupied in what canada refers to as british columbia. The current attempts to create those treaties are not legal because since the occupation we have not had any government’s to participate in any treaty negotiations. The bands we have today are not our government’s, they are imposed systems created by the colonial occupiers of our traditional territories who work in the interest only of the colonial occupiers.
Our traditional government’s would not allow this to happen, they would not sign treaties with these people, so they destroyed them and most of our people, but not all. Many of us are still here, and our territories are still ours by birth right, it is we who have the say, not them!
Any other government’s from any other lands who make the egregious error of negotiating with illegal land owners are doing so in error, and should wisely not continue to purchase or attempt to purchase stolen merchandise. It is not legal, ethical or moral. They do this to aid their business communities economic growth, however are they actually aiding them by participating in theft, genocide and atrocities against the Mother in order to earn capital? Is carnage really good for business? Who is going to purchase their crap if they have to began slaughtering people to get the raw materials they need to produce it? Is this a good corporate marketing platform? Is poisoning the land, water and air any better for business or a smart profit making move? Poisoned air, water and land do result in poisoned human beings and other life forms which rather once again diminishes profit through lack of living healthy earning customers? How stupid is this all really? Something our ancestors wondered, how dumb are these people? Destroying what we need to exist to create what is unnecessary to sustain our own lives is foolish to say the least.
Here we go again, been down this road before with these people and their greedy short sighted ideas. Again I will stand against assaults on the Mother! Again I will stand against theft and destruction of the territories that my ancestors refused to cede to the occupiers to keep it intact and healthy for life in the future. It is my duty, it is my responsibility and it is my right, these are our territories, not canada’s!
