Mi’kmaq women disrupt protesters

Protesters from Power Shift conference outside the conference, March 31, 2014.

This morning several Mi’kmaq women shut down a Maritimes Energy Association briefing held at the Westin Nova Scotian this morning by Nova Scotia Energy Minister Andrew Younger intended to give a briefing on the Province’s plan to move forward on oil and gas projects. The action was supported by a rally, banner drop and occupation organized by youth attending PowerShift Atlantic the preceding weekend. Over a hundred youth occupied the hotel lobby to support Indigenous communities in rejecting the Energy East tar sands pipeline and increased fracking pushes in Atlantic Canada. Over five hundred young people from all over the country are converging in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for Power Shift Atlantic, a training dedicated to bringing about a safe planet and a just future for all people.
