Cheques issued by Krissy Jacobs and Glen Newman lead to their removal from band positions

CBC News, Oct 20, 2014

Two officials with the Squamish Nation have now been relieved of their duties after an investigation found problems with how nearly $1.5 million was spent from an emergency fund.

The investigation looked into a series of cheques issued over the past six years from funds set up to help First Nation’s members with emergencies such as rent, travel to funerals, or clothing.

But a third-party investigation concluded that almost $1.5 million was distributed with few records of how it was spent or why.

Most of that money was handled by Krissy Jacobs, the Squamish Nation’s former manager of communications and band services, who was removed from her position in September.

The band says she kept no records at all for how almost $1 million was distributed.

The investigation found the cheques were made out in her name and the elected band manager Glen Newman.

The investigation says there’s no ‘direct evidence’ they kept the funds, but concluded it was clear they handed out funds to develop political support from members.

Squamish Chiefs and Council says both have now been relieved of their duties.

Krissy Jacobs is no longer an employee of the band, and has been removed as co-chair of the Squamish Nations Chiefs and Council, and has lost all authority over financial matters.

Glen Newman has been removed from his involvement in all financial matters, and as the authority over band emergency staff, and of his access to Squamish Nation computers.

Squamish Nation says it discovered the problem after it changed the way cheques were approved and issued and new control measures will provide better accountability.

  1. That is good and it is what every band as well ass all tribes of each band has to learn to express and eventually experiance. the investigation especially if they can legally manage to train and condition tribal private investigaters and to develope a national and subsequent internation security enforcment to monitor all Financial institutes of there tribes, bands, nations, Confederacies, of “our Continents”;

    Glad I accepted the Eagle feather from a Traditional Family group of Squamish Nation, to Bear Witness to that unconstitutional action…

    –Thanks for the time, Mawgcen.

  3. yes its good and its sad that still today many first nations and especially mine the (ontario first nation) ( im afraid to say who we are but anyone reading this please email me some info on your first nation has done to help guide my people \bladomsin@gmail.com) still struggle today with implementing polices and procedures for leadership to follow. This do whatever you want mentality afflicts all. Its is so good to see and brings me hope that they are some first nations who have taken steps and made polices to govern there leadership to weed out bad apples some which who are not to blame themselves for there way of thinking brought on by things that happened to them due to residentials school. there hatred of governmant is what brings on being in leadership for a so called free ride and use power to better themselves finanacially and politically. we have a long way to go but finally we are taking steps to stop this behaviour and our people are slowly waking up and seeing its voting for who is right for the job and not just who they like. We have no policies or rules for our leadership to follow and now we are just seeing the implications for the lack thereof. We are a young nation and independant but still we have hope and are now acting and the yoounger generation is being recogniezed by our elders that we are the way of our futre and present leadership still afflicted by residential has broguht on fighting amonst each other on who get what.) our chief has taken from us and use to better himself so sad that many first nations are still afflicted by this.
