Mega-quakes have periodically rocked North America’s Pacific Northwest. Indigenous people told terrifying stories about the devastation but refused to leave.

  1. Is it me or is there something wrong with this, “and a tsunami brought floods more than 300 meters inland.” isn’t 300 meters about, 2 and a half football fields?

    • Apparently the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami went up to 3km inland, due to the low land levels in some areas. According to the book Tsunami: The Underrated Hazard by Edward Bryant, a 10 metre high tsunami can reach up to 5 km inland depending on the terrain, while exceptional tsunamis with waves up to 40-50 metres high at shore can reach over 9 km inland depending on terrain.
