Indigenous children, mothers and families and allies are occupying the offices of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada in Vancouver, Coast Salish territories. In solidarity with the youth of Attawapiskat and their demands and needs. Drop by, we are here at 1138 Melville street, 6th floor.

Vancouver locals occupy Indigenous and Northern Affairs office in solidarity with Attawapiskat

About twenty-five people have occupied the Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada office in Vancouver.

Protestor Chrisse Oleman says the action is in solidarity with the children of Attawapiskat.

The Northern Ontario Indigenous community has been plagued by poverty, crumbling homes, and a shocking suicide rate.

Oleman says they want to see the children of Attawapiskat are asking for things every child should have access to.
“They’re not asking for ridiculous things. They’re asking for basic things. They’re asking for houses that don’t make them sick. They’re asking for water that they can drink out of their tap. They’re asking for food they can afford to eat. They’re asking for a rec centre. They’re asking for a library.”
Oleman says it’s disgusting some Canadians wonder why people in the isolated community don’t move elsewhere for more opportunity.

She says people shouldn’t be forced to move from the land where their creation story began.
