Community, First Nations leaders demand B.C. act to avert a second Mount Polley mine disaster

Local politicians and First Nation leaders are calling on the province to quickly avert another disaster at Mount Polley.They reacted angrily Sunday to news that recent heavy snow is pushing water levels to dangerous levels in a temporary containment pit. The pit was created to replace the tailings pond dam that collapsed in 2014.

Reports, and a video, have surfaced claiming that protesters decrying the Oak Flat land grab and other disrespect to Indians allegedly perpetrated by John McCain ran his cavalcade off the Navajo Nation when he was there to celebrate Code Talkers Day on August 14.

“Water is life!” they changed in Navajo, waving banners painted with messages including “McCain = Indian Killer” and “McCain’s not welcome here.” Read the rest of this entry

The Southern Ute Indian Tribe, the first to watch a 100-mile-long plume of toxic mining sludge flow through their reservation in the Animas River, has declared a state of local disaster.

“The cost and magnitude of responding to and recovery from the impact of the water contamination from the Gold King Mine Animas River Spill, caused by the EPA on August 5, 2015 is far in excess of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe’s available resources,” the tribe said in its declaration. B.C. is allowing a partial reopening of mine that had catastrophic dam failure last summer

The T’exelc and Xatsull First Nations say they are extremely disappointed that the B.C. government has allowed Imperial Metals to partly restart the Mount Polley mine.

The First Nations contend that allowing the gold and copper mine to reopen is premature, ignores their concerns and could place their and other communities at risk.

A gold and copper mine in northwestern B.C. that still faces angry opposition from its neighbours in Alaska has received approval for a full operating permit from the provincial government.

B.C. Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett announced Friday that the Red Chris Mine, owned by Imperial Metals, will soon be in full production, despite environmental concerns from First Nations, environmental groups and Alaskans, who are downstream from the mine site. OAST SALISH TERRITORY –  Imperial Metals, the mining company responsible for the Mount Polley Mine tailings disaster, held its Annual General Meeting in downtown Vancouver today.

The meeting had to be held behind police lines to keep shareholders from hearing directly from opponents of their mining plans – environmentalists, community members, activists and peoples of the Secwepemc, Tahltan, Wet’suwet’en, Ahousaht, and Tla-o-qui-aht nations. Read the rest of this entry
