An RCMP operation to enforce a court injunction over a pipeline dispute in northern B.C. has come to an end for now without further arrests, APTN News has learned.

Hereditary Chief Na’Moks of the Wet’suwet’en Nation confirmed Tuesday night talks were underway to reach “a peaceful solution” after Monday’s raid at a checkpoint 20 km down the road from the camp.

MORICE WEST FORESTRY SERVICE ROAD, B.C.—After Monday’s chaotic retreat from the Gidimt’en checkpoint, the mood Tuesday at the Unist’ot’en camp healing lodge was subdued and tense.

Windows were covered with blankets.

On the bridge nearby, a gate was topped with barbed wire and monitored by a security camera, as Unist’ot’en clan members awaited the inevitable return of police.

Around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, spotters along the logging road reported police were on the move again with more vehicles and heavy equipment.

Trudeau addresses Indigenous forum in Ottawa as First Nations protesters march through city

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s opening remarks to Indigenous leaders attending an annual forum in Ottawa today were delayed after anti-pipeline protesters breached security at the venue to stage a sit-in.

Trudeau appeared at the Modern Treaty and Self-Governing First Nations Forum this afternoon. The prime minister’s statement was put on hold after hundreds of Indigenous protesters marched from Parliament Hill to the forum’s venue at Ottawa’s old City Hall on Sussex Drive and entered the building.

MORICE WEST FORESTRY SERVICE ROAD, B.C.—A checkpoint camp was abandoned behind a massive fallen tree and a barrier of flame on Monday afternoon as dozens of RCMP officers finally pushed past the barricade set up to bar entry to the traditional territories of the Wet’suwet’en people.

Fourteen people would be arrested by the end of the day.

The checkpoint, for weeks a movable gate at the mouth of a bridge, had been fortified by the Gidimt’en clan of the Wet’suwet’en nation as the RCMP marshalled in nearby towns over the weekend.

Coastal GasLink pipeline meant to transport natural gas to coast

The RCMP have entered a fortified checkpoint on a forest service road in northern B.C. where people at the Gidimt’en camp were barring a pipeline company from access.

The Mounties announced Monday they were going to enforce a court injunction to allow Coastal GasLink access to the road and bridge near Houston, B.C.
