Wolf hunting in Peace Region could have no limits, province proposes

Province also wants to triple the number of grizzly bears that can be shot in a remote area of the Peace

B.C.’s Ministry of Forestry, Lands and Natural Resource Operations wants to remove limits how many wolves hunters can kill in the Peace Region and when.

The changes were proposed on Nov. 30 on a ministry website that accepts public feedback on changes to regulations.

The proposed changes would also remove the time limits on the hunting season.

First Nations along B.C.’s north and central coasts are vowing to do whatever it takes to enforce a ban on trophy grizzly bear hunting in their traditional territories.

The Coastal First Nations alliance first announced the ban in 2012, but say that because the provincial government still issues trophy-hunting permits, bears are still being killed for their heads and paws.

Patrolling up and down British Columbia’s coast with binoculars are a group of dedicated First Nations volunteers that boat right up to armed hunters, often American, in their vessels to dissuade them from killing at-risk grizzlies just for sport.

Called the Coastal Guardian Watchmen, they urge unsuspecting trophy hunters to halt their pursuit of grizzlies as insensitive to First Nations culture, and against tribal law.
