Province’s environmental approval challenged

The Squamish Nation has launched another lawsuit in an effort to stop Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline, this time targeting the provincial government.
The petition filed in B.C. Supreme Court on April 20 asks for a judicial review of the province’s decision to grant the pipeline an environmental certificate, alleging the province failed in its constitutional duty to consult with the First Nation.

The battle between protesters and Kinder Morgan flared up on Monday after masked men allegedly broke into a vehicle on Burnaby Mountain to steal surveying equipment.
“I understand that a window was smashed on one of the contractors vehicles and some surveying equipment was taken by a masked man who we believe has previously interfered with the survey work we’ve been undertaking,” Trans Mountain Pipeline spokeswoman Lizette Parsons Bell said. Lessons We Keep Learning: Reflections on the Burnaby Mountain Pipeline Opposition

For many weeks local residents occupied a small piece of unceded Coast Salish Territory (the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area) in hopes of preventing the building of another oil pipeline that would connect the Alberta tar sands with tankers in Vancouver’s harbor and triple the amount of bitumen already transported.
