In the beginning, Randy Fobister of Grassy Narrows First Nation, in northwestern Ontario, disagreed with community members who were stopping logging trucks from entering their traditional territory, but 13 years later the deputy chief says “it’s really important the blockade is still there.”

Indigenous people in Guatemala were in the front lines of anti-government protests in late August, just a week before the resignation of President Otto Perez Molina on September 2. Perez Molina was then arrested on charges that he participated in a multi-million dollar fraud scheme.

But indigenous activists, along with tens of thousands of other Guatemalans, had been protesting against many of his policies since the Spring, which culminated in three days of non-stop protests from August 25-27.

A small group of fish farm protesters calling themselves Ahousaht Muuschim and supporters accepted an invitation to meet with Ahousaht leadership and other band members at the Thunderbird Hall Sept. 14.

Tyee Ha’wilth (head chief) Lewis Maquinna George extended the invitation after protesters blocked the installation of Cermaq’s salmon farm just north of Ahousaht.

Chief Councillor Greg Louie spoke to Ha-Shilth-Sa immediately following the meeting, which included employees of Cermaq who are Ahousaht members.

Northern B.C. First Nation members say they stopped Malaysian state-controlled Petronas, the company behind an $11.4-billion liquefied natural gas terminal, from starting test ocean drilling in northwest B.C. this weekend.

The 33-metre Quin Delta drill ship, owned by Gregg Marine in California, and a barge were moved into the waters off Lelu Island near Prince Rupert by Pacific NorthWest LNG early Saturday morning.

TOFINO, B.C. — Members of a Vancouver Island First Nation are vowing to risk arrest rather than allow an international fish farming company to anchor an open-net salmon farm north of Tofino.

Members of the Ahousaht First Nation say they set up a boat blockade Wednesday at the site of the new farm, owned by Norwegian-based Cermaq.

The Achuar communities say foreign oil companies pollute their lands and their clean water. They demand compensation and clean up of oil spills.

Peruvian indigenous protesters seized oil wells in an Amazonian oil block Tuesday to press the government to respond to demands for compensation due to the pollution caused by the petroleum operations.

The protesters from the Achuar indigenous communities said they also plan to halt output in a nearby concession.

Clashes between protesters and security forces erupted as a rally against Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa swept the capital of Quito and several other cities Thursday.

After riot police tried to block around 10,000 protesters near the San Francisco Plaza, they fired tear gas while protesters threw sticks and rocks. More than a dozen police officers were reportedly injured.

Maui police identified the 20 individuals arrested and charged for blocking a convoy of heavy equipment and telescope parts from being delivered to Haleakala for the ongoing construction of the Daniel K Inouye Solar Telescope.

On Thursday, July 30, 2015 at around 10 p.m., officers with the Maui Police Department were summoned to Central Maui Baseyard to assist with crowd control and public safety issues involving the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope transport project. A representative of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy initiated a complaint that numerous individuals were blocking the exit, according to Maui police.
