The New Brunswick government has extended for an indefinite period its ban on hydraulic fracturing, saying the jury is still out on the risks to public health and environment from the controversial practice.
The province has faced major divisions over proposed shale gas development, with industry arguing it would spur the economy and boost job creation, but many residents and First Nations activists fearful of the potential environmental impact of fracking – the technique of using chemically laced water under high pressure to break rock and extract natural gas or oil.

Houston-based subsidiary of Southwestern Energy, SWN Resources Canada has pulled its presence from the province of New Brunswick.
The oil and gas company issued a statement saying its Moncton office closed Wednesday, laying off two people, including manager of the N.B. project, Chad Peters.

Anti-shale gas protester Annie Clair had all charges against her dropped in a Moncton courthouse on Monday, almost two years after the charges were laid in relation to incidents near Elispogtog First Nation.
Clair was scheduled for a four-day trial, but the Crown dropped the charges and she walked out to a small group of clapping supporters. Clair hugged her lawyer, Gordon Allen, and thanked him for his work. Read the rest of this entry

Internal documents show repeated Warrior Society requests for negotiating assistance denied
KJIPUKTUK (Halifax) — An Access to Information request has revealed that during the course of anti-shale gas protests in New Brunswick in 2013, 5th Canadian Division Support Base (CDSB) Gagetown, Eastern Canada’s largest military facility, was contacted on two separate occasions by high ranking members of the Mi’kmaq Warrior Society. On each occasion, the Warrior Society – one of the key strategic groups involved in the on-the-ground protests that would ultimately see 100 activists arrested – requested negotiators from the Canadian Armed Forces, citing a breakdown in trust and an increasingly toxic working relationship with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Sunday’s silent auction to help with lawyer fees
KJIPUKTUK (HALIFAX) – On April 20th, Elsipogtog First Nation band member Annie Clair will be heading to Moncton to face six charges related to the violent actions of New Brunswick RCMP against defenders of the land in Kent County, New Brunswick.

SWN Canada has just been granted a one-year extension on licenses they have to look for shale gas in New Brunswick.
The company’s licenses were set to expire today, but the New Brunswick government granted SWN Resources permission to extend their search.
“While a license to search gives the holder rights to the area in question, it is subject to government’s proposed moratorium on hydraulic fracturing. The moratorium will remain in place until our five conditions are addressed and the risks to our health, water and environment are fully understood,” says Energy and Miners Minister Donald Arseneault. Verdict postponed because of a power outage that affected government computers

Two anti-shale gas protesters will have to wait until next week for a verdict, all because of an osprey nest. Germain Junior Breau of Upper Rexton, N.B., and Aaron Francis of Eskasoni, N.S., are being tried together on a number of charges related to a clash between police and protesters on October 17, 2013.
The verdict that was supposed to be handed down by the judge on Thursday was postponed because of a power outage that occurred June 9 in Fredericton. Three days earlier, an osprey built a nest on the power lines, which caused power problems for days.
Small group walking from Elsipogtog to Moncton to ask company to halt exploration activities

A small group of anti-shale gas protesters started a three-day march from Elsipogtog First Nation to Moncton on Friday, to hand deliver letters to SWN Resources Canada.
They say their message hasn’t changed — they want SWN to stop its shale gas exploration activities in Kent County.
